What does it actually take to earn a pilot license? The FAA's requirements are more approachable than they sound. Here's the plain-English version from Los Angeles Flight School, Van Nuys (KVNY).
The core requirements
- Age — solo at 16, Private Pilot License at 17 (no upper limit).
- Medical — an FAA medical certificate for most training; Sport Pilot can often use a driver's license.
- English — the ability to read, speak, and understand English.
- Knowledge test — pass the written FAA knowledge test.
- Flight hours — a minimum of 40 hours for a Private Pilot License (20 for Sport), including solo and cross-country time.
- Checkride — pass a practical exam with an FAA examiner.
What about higher certificates?
