What Is a Private Pilot License?
The Private Pilot License (PPL) is an FAA certificate that lets you act as pilot-in-command of a single-engine airplane, fly friends and family, and travel across the country in daytime and night, VFR conditions. At LA Flight School you can finish in as little as 30 days on our accelerated, FAA-approved syllabus, or train part-time around work and school. No prior experience is required.
To Start, You Need To:
- Be able to read, speak, and understand English
- Hold a third-class FAA medical certificate (we help you schedule it)
- Be at least 17 to earn the certificate — you can begin training earlier
Your Path to Your Certificate
Training combines flight lessons, ground instruction, and simulator time, all mapped to the FAA Airman Certification Standards. Books and study materials are included, and up to 2.5 hours of Redbird MCX simulator time can be credited toward your certificate under FAR §61.109. Our six-step path takes you from first meeting to checkride:
- Consultation — meet your team and map your plan
- Demo Flight — get comfortable at the controls
- Pre-Solo — master the fundamentals
- First Solo — fly the pattern on your own
- Cross-Country — navigate across SoCal
- Checkride — earn your certificate

How Long Does It Take?
Most students earn their PPL in two to three months of part-time training, or in as little as 30 days on our accelerated schedule. Your pace depends on how often you fly, weather, and how quickly you complete the FAA written knowledge test. We build a plan around your goals at your consultation.
Modern Aircraft and a Full-Motion Sim
Train on Piper, Cessna, Diamond, and Cirrus aircraft, backed by an FAA-approved Redbird MCX full-motion simulator. Simulator time is FAA-creditable, which lowers your total cost while sharpening your skills before you fly the real maneuver. (Fleet and simulator details are placeholders — verify.)
