Everything you need to know before you start flight training at Los Angeles Flight School, Van Nuys (KVNY). Still have questions? Call (818) 399-9905 or book a free consultation.
Do I need any experience to start?
None at all. Most students begin with a discovery flight where your instructor handles the technical parts and hands you the controls — no experience required.
How old do I have to be to learn to fly?
There's no minimum age to start lessons or fly a discovery flight. You can solo at 16 and earn your Private Pilot License at 17. There's no upper age limit — we train students of every age.
How much does it cost to learn to fly?
Discovery flights start at $229. Full certificate packages start at $7,900 for a Sport Pilot License and $10,400 for a Private Pilot License. See full pricing, and note that financing is available.
How long does it take to get a Private Pilot License?
Most students finish in three to six months. The single biggest factor is how often you fly — two or three lessons a week gets you there faster. See realistic timelines.
Do I need a medical certificate?
For most training you'll need an FAA medical certificate from an aviation medical examiner. Sport Pilot students can often fly using a valid U.S. driver's license instead.
What aircraft will I train in?
Our fleet includes the Diamond DA20, Cessna, Piper Arrow and Seminole, and the Turbo Cirrus SR22 — plus a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator.
Can international students train here?
Yes. International students need TSA approval before flight training begins — see our TSA application guide. We help you through every step.
