The Twin-Engine Time Airlines Want
A Multi-Engine Rating adds twin-engine privileges to your certificate — and it is one of the most valuable additions on your path to an airline career. It is also one of the fastest ratings you can earn: focused, efficient, and with no separate written exam. Train with LA Flight School at Van Nuys and log the multi-engine time that hiring departments look for.
What Is a Multi-Engine Rating?
A Multi-Engine Rating (MEL) authorizes you to act as pilot-in-command of an airplane with more than one engine. Beyond the added performance and redundancy of a twin, the rating teaches the skills that define a professional pilot: engine-out management, asymmetric-thrust control, and single-engine procedures. Because much of airline flying is in multi-engine aircraft, the multi-engine time you build here directly supports airline hiring.
What You Need to Add It
- Hold a Private Pilot Certificate (airplane single-engine) — the rating can be added to a Private or a Commercial certificate
- Be able to read, speak, and understand English
- Hold a current FAA medical certificate
- Complete ground and flight training on multi-engine aerodynamics, systems, and engine-out procedures
- Receive an instructor endorsement
- Pass the multi-engine checkride — there is no separate written exam for the add-on
Focused, Fast, and Practical
Because there is no written test, the multi-engine add-on is efficient — most of your time is spent flying. You will learn twin systems and performance, then drill the maneuvers and emergency procedures that matter most: engine failures on takeoff and in cruise, single-engine approaches, and precise control when one engine quits. If you are training toward a career, we tailor the rating to commercial standards so it counts toward your professional goals.

How Long Does It Take?
The multi-engine add-on is quick — often a few days to about two weeks, and on an accelerated schedule it can be completed in a handful of concentrated flights. Your exact timeline depends on your currency and how often you fly.
Train in a Twin
You will train in a twin-engine aircraft. (Source is inconsistent on the specific twin — the theme page references a Diamond twin, while the Discovery and Airline pages reference the Piper Seminole. Confirm LA Flight School's actual multi-engine trainer before publishing.)
Multi-Engine Rating Questions
Is there a written exam for the multi-engine add-on?
