The Most Valuable Upgrade After Your Private Certificate
An Instrument Rating is the single most useful thing you can add after your Private Pilot License. It lets you fly by reference to instruments alone — through clouds, the SoCal marine layer, and reduced visibility — and to operate confidently in the busy IFR airspace around Los Angeles. Train with LA Flight School at Van Nuys, where you will fly real instrument approaches with live ATC from day one.
What Is an Instrument Rating?
An Instrument Rating (IR) is an add-on to your existing pilot certificate that authorizes you to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Instead of relying on outside visual references, you learn to control the aircraft, navigate, and fly precise approaches using only your instruments and ATC clearances. For anyone flying in Southern California — where morning fog and marine layer are routine — it is the difference between staying grounded and getting where you need to go. It is also a required stepping stone toward a Commercial certificate and an airline career.
What You Need to Earn It
- Hold a Private Pilot Certificate
- Be able to read, speak, and understand English
- Log 50 hours of cross-country pilot-in-command time
- Log 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including approved simulator time
- Receive an instructor endorsement
- Pass the FAA Instrument Airplane written knowledge test and the checkride
Train IFR the Smart Way
You will master holds, precision and non-precision approaches, IFR navigation, and emergency procedures — first in our FAA-approved Redbird Advanced Aviation Training Device, then in the airplane. Under FAR §61.65, up to 10 hours of simulator time can be credited toward your rating, which lowers cost and lets you rehearse demanding procedures safely before flying them. Then you fly the real thing: actual IFR approaches into KVNY, talking to real Southern California ATC.

Instrument Rating Questions
Do I need my Private Pilot License first?
Yes. An Instrument Rating is an add-on to an existing pilot certificate, so you must hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate before you begin.
How much of the training is in the simulator?
Under FAR §61.65, up to 10 hours of approved simulator time can count toward your rating. We use our Redbird device to teach approaches, holds, and emergencies before you fly them in the aircraft.
How long does it take to finish?
Typically two to four months part-time, or four to six weeks on an accelerated schedule, depending on how often you fly and Southern California weather.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. You can pay the school directly with interest-free installments or finance long-term through our lending partner.
Where is the training located?
At Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406, where you will fly real IFR approaches with live ATC.
