What Is a Discovery Flight?

A discovery flight is a hands-on introductory lesson — your first official step toward becoming a pilot. After a short pre-flight briefing, you and your instructor taxi out, take off from Van Nuys, and fly a route over the LA basin. You will handle the controls in the air, learn the basics of climbs, turns, and level flight, and finish with a debrief. The whole experience runs about 60 to 120 minutes including briefing and debrief.
