Part 61 vs Part 141: Which Flight Training Path Fits You?

You'll see "Part 61" and "Part 141" thrown around a lot when researching flight schools. Both refer to sections of the FAA regulations that govern how training is delivered. Here's what actually matters for you.

The key differences

  • Part 61 — flexible, student-paced training that fits around work and school. Slightly higher hour minimums on paper, but real-world completion times are often similar.
  • Part 141 — a rigid, FAA-approved syllabus with lower minimums, better suited to full-time academies and certain visa students.

Which is right for you?

For most people learning to fly in Los Angeles — especially those balancing a job or school — Part 61 is the better fit, and it's how we train at Los Angeles Flight School, Van Nuys (KVNY). You get one-on-one instruction, flexible scheduling, and a path all the way to the airlines.
