Your First Time in the Cockpit

Nervous about your first flight? That's completely normal — and by the time you land, most first-timers are already asking how to book the next one. Here's exactly what to expect the first time you take the controls at Los Angeles Flight School, Van Nuys (KVNY).

Before you fly

No experience or preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes, bring sunglasses, and arrive about 15 minutes early. Your instructor will walk you around the aircraft and explain the basics in plain English.

In the air

Your FAA-certified instructor handles the briefing, takeoff, and radio work. Once you're safely airborne, the controls are yours — you'll fly over the coast, the Valley, and the LA skyline. It's smoother and quieter than most people expect, and your instructor is on the controls with you the entire time.

After you land

You'll log the flight, and if you decide to continue, the fee is 100% credited toward your training. Many first-timers start their Private Pilot License the same week.
