A Parent's Guide to Teen Flight Training

If your teen dreams of flying, you probably have questions about safety, cost, and what's actually involved. This guide answers the ones parents ask us most at Los Angeles Flight School, Van Nuys (KVNY).

Is it safe?

Training is one-on-one with patient, FAA-certified instructors in well-maintained aircraft, and much of the risk-heavy practice happens first in our full-motion simulator. Safety is the foundation of everything we teach.

Age milestones

  • There's no minimum age to start lessons.
  • Teens can fly solo at 16.
  • Teens can earn a Private Pilot License at 17.

Why it's worth it

Flight training builds discipline, focus, and confidence — and a licensed teen pilot is a standout on any college application. See our Teen Flight Training Program.
